Mimi Gregoire Carpenter

Kennebunkport, Maine

Known affectionately by her peers as the unquestioned painter of Maine's unique seashore.

Author and illustrator of children's books.

Painter of beach treasures like beach glass and shells.

Mimi Gregoire Carpenter is "a Maine painter". She's "been dubbed an 'environmental artist'. Her delicate watercolor paintings might be termed 'tide-pool art'. The intricate designs depict the oft overlooked sea creatures and objects cast up on the state's craggy shorelines. 'I paint all the things people step on', she says... One painting is a dizzying tableau of hundreds of periwinkles; another, the underbelly of a horseshoe crab; another, the skeletal remains of a cormorant. Most of her works, however, combine marine subjects - sea urchins and mussel shells, whelks, starfish, smooth stones, razor clams and seaweed - and present them as though they had been dumped from a bag after a day of beachcombing."
